A Methyl Bromide health assessment is tailored to the toxic effects of methyl bromide (a highly toxic fumigant gas). It’s usually required under SafeWork Australia health monitoring guidelines and workplace WHS regulations.
Methyl bromide is a toxic gas often used in fumigation and pest control. Most farm and storage uses have been phased out, but port and quarantine applications remain.
It can be breathed in or absorbed through the skin, and the dangerous part is that symptoms might not show up straight away. That’s why regular health checks are important if you work with it.
Exposure can cause serious health effects, including breathing problems, neurological symptoms, and even life-threatening illness, which is why strict controls and protective equipment are required.
Remember: Methyl bromide is no joke. Regular monitoring can pick up health issues early and keep you safe on the job.
Methyl Bromide is colourless and odourless – you might not even notice you’ve been exposed.
Methyl Bromide affects the lungs, skin, nerves and brain.
It can cause serious illness or even death if exposure is high or repeated.
Keep an eye out for these warning signs, even hours after you’ve been working with it:
- Headaches or dizziness
- Feeling confused or “foggy”
- Trouble walking straight or shaky hands
- Blurred or double vision
- ]Cough, chest tightness or shortness of breath
- Skin redness, blisters or irritation
If you notice any of these, stop work straight away and seek medical help.
- Talking through your work history and symptoms
- Breathing tests (spirometry)
- A check of your skin, eyes and nervous system
- A simple blood test to see if methyl bromide is in your system
